Ruben Alves is a Franco-Portuguese actor, screenwriter and director who is driven by a desire to trigger emotions and see in the eyes of those who watch his films the spark that is ignited when they are told a moving story. Throughout his youth, he learned on the job and, together with Hugo Gélin, explored screenwriting, photography, and acting.
The first film he directed was his short film A l'Abri des Regards Indiscrets in 2002, which was followed by a feature film in 2013, The Gilded Cage, inspired by his parents’ lives. The question of identity is recurrent in his works. Ruben takes a light-hearted yet elegant look at people on the fringe of dehumanising social normality.
His last film, Miss, starring Alex Wetter, released in 2021, tells the story of a young man who aspires to become the next Miss France. His works are spirited, cutting, insolent yet restrained and always aim to showcase the authenticity of the stories he tells. Ruben is a great fan of a good challenge and continues exploring his spheres of action, welcoming life’s surprises with open arms.
What’s your best memory from a film set? The team screening of my first film, during which my parents discovered my work without having known anything about what I’d been creating for 2 years…
