Matthias Castegnaro is a director and screenwriter for whom creation is fueled, first and foremost, by close observation of reality. He acquired the technical basics of his profession at a cinema school before broadening his knowledge in the field by working as an assistant director on short and feature-length films, TV series and advertising films

After working as a DOP and editor for a documentary series on fashion for ARTE, his keen eye led him to direct actors. The stories he brought to the screen realized their full potential thanks to his close creative collaboration with the actors he directed. 


In 2020, Matthias wrote and directed Replay, a collection of eight short films for ARTE, adapted from major classical works and transposed into a contemporary dimension bringing them a new breath of life. The series, selected in several festivals, including Cannes Series 2020, was Matthias' first major success and a sign of many successful projects to com

What is your best memory from a film set/photo shoot? When we were filming the pilot for my series Replay for Arte.tv: there was a scene from Corneille's Médée - played Lou de Laâge and accompanied by Gaël Kamilindi, of the Comédie Française, in the role of Jason. They were in a car, driving along a country road up to a petrol station, by night. We were using an onboard camera and it was a sequence shot. It was a finely tuned choreography from both an acting and technical point of view. The intensity built up with each take... until we finally reached the absolute wonder of the take we'd been looking for.
