@julyhygreck
July Hygreck is a screenwriter and director who got where she is today thanks to her relentless determination and unwavering desire for cinema. When, like her, you imagine your first feature film at the age of 13 and direct your first short film at 17, there is no discussion as to the pathway to follow. Yet July didn’t want to follow the classical cinema schema and instead entered Penninghen School, where she acquired a facility for artistic direction.
During her several lives that she led all at once, the director occupied every role possible on a film set whilst never losing sight of directing. Constantly in motion, she created the ”Les 12 courts de Minuit” festival, a jewel of a cinematographic event that has significantly participated in making short formats legitimate. She filmed several television programmes and signed off on some advertising films for L’Oréal, Roger & Gallet, Coca-Cola and Levis.
Her first feature film, Blockbuster, which was also the first original creation proposed by Netflix in France, came out in 2018. In Blockbuster, in a light but serious tone, she explored what constitutes the core of her fiction films: the unending decoding of human relationships. July Hygreck is currently preparing two films, always with the same impatience to get back behind the camera.
A motto? I borrowed Truffaut’s: ”What is a film director? He’s first and foremost someone who is constantly questioned, about everything and anything. Sometimes, he has the answers but not always."
